What is a computer Driver?
The Driver is a computer program which allows the computer to interact with a hardware device.
Most devices on the computer, such as printers, scanners, modems and digital cameras, need Drivers to run.
Drivers are hardware dependent and operating system specific.
A device Driver is acting as translator between a hardware device and the applications or operating systems that use it.
Without Drivers, computers will not be able to distinguish between one device and the other.
Device Drivers tell your machine what the device is, what the device does, and all the other instructions needed for proper operation.
Why do you need to update your Drivers?
Even though your specific device came with an installation CD with everything you need, by the time you get that piece of hardware, there are probably new updates.
New features, more efficiency, increased virus protection and higher performance are just some of the advantages offered by updating your Drivers.
Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face problems ranging from the relatively minor, such as having hardware that seems to perform poorly, to the more major problems such as hardware failure, hardware conflicts and complete system crashes.
Choosing and installing the correct device drivers for a given hardware is often a key component of computer system configuration.
How to update your Drivers?
One way to check device drivers on a Windows system is to enter the Device Manager, choose Properties, then click the Hardware tab.
From the Device Manager window highlight a hardware device then right-click on it.
Choose Properties again, then click the Driver tab. Here you can see the device driver’s name and version number.
